Women’s Basketball
The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team hosted the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes on Monday, Dec. 4. In the first quarter, the Tartans pulled ahead and led 23-10 when the clock hit zero for the first time. The second quarter was a similar story, when the Tartans widened their lead after scoring 28 points to Geneva’s nine, making it 51-19 at the half. This included 22 points in the paint and 12 second-chance points. During the third quarter, the Tartans led by as many as 35 points, though scoring was generally more even; the Tartans scored 30 and Geneva scored 29, making it 81-48. In the last quarter, the Tartans fell behind on scoring, but still had a wide victory over the Golden Tornadoes, with a final score of 103-74.
On Saturday, Dec. 9, the College of Wooster traveled to Carnegie Mellon for the Tartans’ second game of the week. The game was close at the end of the first quarter, with the Tartans having a small lead of 14-12 over the Fighting Scots. However, the Tartans broke away in the second quarter and held Wooster to three points and led 36-15. The Tartan defense continued to dominate in the second half and held Wooster to only eight points in each of the third and fourth quarters. At the final buzzer, the Tartans were ahead 50 points, 81-31.
These two wins moved the women’s basketball team to 7-2 on the season. They will be on break until Dec. 29, when they take on 17th-ranked Trine University for a 4:15 p.m. tipoff.
Men’s Basketball
On Dec. 3, the Carnegie Mellon men’s basketball team took on Bowdoin College on the second day of the University Athletics Association (UAA) Challenge at Middlebury College.
While the Tartans took an early 7-2 lead over the Polar Bears, Bowdoin recorded the next 12 points to double the Tartans’ score, 14-7. The Tartans slowly clawed their way toward the Polar Bears and took a one-point lead, 20-19. However, Bowdoin took the lead back and was ahead going into halftime, 36-29.
Five minutes into the second half, the Tartans were still behind, 42-34, but a 13-3 Tartan run put them back into the lead, 47-45. Despite this, the Polar Bears managed to come back and score 21 points compared to 15 points from the Tartans, causing the Tartans to fall just short, 66-62.
This was the team’s second loss of the season, and they now sit at 7-2 overall. The team will next be in action when they host Chatham University on Tuesday, Dec. 19 for a noon tipoff.
