On Saturday, Feb. 10 in Wiegand Gym, more than 450 students, staff, faculty, and community members stood around tubs of dried goods. From 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Rise Against Hunger volunteers packed over 100,000 meals.

Rise Against Hunger (RAH) is an international non-profit that focuses on distributing food to developing countries. The Office of Student Leadership, Involvement, and Civic Engagement invited RAH to host Saturday’s meal packing event. Volunteer groups were tasked with packing, weighing, sealing, and boxing up the meal bags. They included rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and 20 different vitamins and minerals.

Student volunteers represented numerous different student groups and organizations, sports teams, sororities, and fraternities. Cyril Neff, a resident assistant (RA) for the first-year Welch dorm, invited the students on his floor to join him and other RAs at the event.

“I went to Rise Against Hunger for the first time last year with my housing community,” Neff said. “I really enjoy being able to help others in the company of my friends.”

RAH plans to distribute the meals to needy families in the Philippines.
