Men’s Tennis

On Friday, April 12, the 19th-ranked Carnegie Mellon men’s tennis team headed to 30th-ranked Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. 

The Tartans fell short in doubles play, and were behind 3-0 heading into singles play. Senior Nicholas Wernick went 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth singles slot for the first Tartan point of the match. First-year Raghav Jangbahadur earned another Tartan point in first singles, going 6-2, 7-6 (9-7). All the other Tartans lost their singles matches, and the Tartans fell 7-2. They are now 6-8 on the season. Their next match will be on Saturday, April 20, when the Tartans host Case Western Reserve University. 

Women’s Tennis

On Sunday, April 7, the 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon women’s tennis team traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on Christopher Newport University at the University of Mary Washington. 

To open, the Tartans swept in doubles play. In the first spot, junior Zoe Angell and senior Danna Taylor went 8-4, earning the first point for the Tartans. In third doubles, sophomore Anika Joshi and junior Sarah Yang went 8-6 for the second Tartan point. The duo of sophomores Anna Chow and Divya Venkatarama finished third, earning another point after going 8-6. 

Heading into singles play 3-0, the Tartans continued to dominate. Taylor took the first point, going 6-3, 6-4 in the second spot. In the first spot, Yang earned another point for the Tartans, going 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). In the third spot, Vankatarama went 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-6) to earn the Tartans another point. Angell went 6-4, 5-4 in the fourth spot and Joshi went 6-3, 6-2 in the fifth spot for the rest of the points for the Tartans. Overall, the Tartans went 8-1, and they are now at 10-4 for the season. 

The Carnegie Mellon women’s tennis team will next take on Kenyon College on Sunday, April 21. 

Women’s Golf

On Monday, April 8 and Tuesday, April 9, the Carnegie Mellon women’s golf team headed to The Dominion Club in Glen Allen, Va. for the 36-hole Stith Invitational. 

After the first day, the Tartans were on the head of the 15-team field with a score of 290. Graduate student Alexis Sudjianto, junior Sriya Mupparaju, and first-year Samantha Wang all recorded par of 72, placing them second individually. Junior Kaylin Yeoh and first-year Nikita Jadhav both recorded 74 on the day, tying them for eighth individually.

On the second day, the Tartans continued the tournament strong. Sudjianto placed second overall with a 146, recording a 74. Mupparaju shot a 75y, going 147 overall, placing third. Wang carded a 76, going 148 and tying for fourth with Yeoh, who went 74 for the second day in a row. Jadhav shot an 83, ending with a 157 overall. 

The Tartans finished first overall with a team score of 589 (290-299). The overall score of 589 is the fifth best two-round score in the program’s history. They will be back in action on April 15 and April 16 for the 54-hole Deb Jackson Invitational at the RTJ SchoolMaster Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala. 

Men’s Track and Field

The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team competed in the Susquehanna Multi on April 11-12, Westminster Invitational on April 12-13, and Bucknell Invitational on April 13-14.

Senior Thomas Rich competed at the Susquehanna Multi in the Decathlon in the seeded section. Rich won the event, finishing with 6,823 points. Highlights include Rich placing first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.99, third in the pole vault after clearing 4.05 meters, fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.70 meters, second in the shot put with a toss of 11.56 meters, second in the discus throw with a mark of 34.29 meters, and second in the javelin throw with a mark of 53.19 meters. 

Tartans also competed in the Westminster Invitational. 

Junior Nathaniel Deyak took ninth in the hammer throw with a mark of 41.62 meters. Sophomore Samuel Alligood placed fifth in the shot put with 14.40 meters. He also took seventh in the discus throw with a mark of 41.66 meters. 

In the pole vault, sophomore Christian Duckworth took second after clearing 4.62 meters. In the long jump, first-year Pujith Kachana placed ninth with a mark of 6.24 meters. First-year Atai Tahasan took first with a mark of 13.96 meters while Kachana took sixth with 12.56 meters. In the javelin throw, first-year Derek Armfied placed fourth with a throw of 53.73 meters, and senior Jonathan David took eighth with a throw of 49.94 meters. 

In the 400 meter dash, sophomore Bennett Wong took sixth after crossing the line in 52.15 seconds while junior Pranav Rajbhandari finished seventh with a time of 52.38. First-year Matthew Yu took seventh in the 100 meter dash after finishing in 11.12. 

In the 800-meter run, junior Sean Dutton took fourth with a time of 1:59.94, junior Jack Ellinger took seventh with a time of 2:00.38, and first-year Connor Reidy took 10th with a time of 2:02.90. First-year Angelo Parrino finished third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:12.38. In the 3,000-meter Steeplechase, first-year Greg Kossuth took third with a time of 10:06.38. 

Tartans swept the top six of the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Thomas Damiani won with a time of 15:13.32, senior Charlie Murphy placed second with a time of 15:14.18, first-year Nathan Massie followed in third with a time of 15:16.53, junior Seth Williams took fourth with a time of 15:21.13, and first-years Christian Brower and Adam Kollgaard took fifth and sixth with times of 15:21.24 and 15:22.17, respectively. 

The Tartan 4×400 meter relay team also finished second with a time of 3:30.23. 

As of writing, the Bucknell Invitation has not finished, and will be covered in next week’s issue of The Tartan, along with the Slippery Rock Last Chance Meet, which is happening on Thursday, April 18. 

Women’s Track and Field

This weekend, the Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team competed in the Westminster Invitational on April 12-13 and the Bucknell Invitational on April 13-14. 

At Westminster, Tartans recorded top 10 finishes. 

In the hammer throw, junior Kayla Rountree took eighth with a mark of 36.30 meters. Junior Taylor Symonette took eighth in the shot put with a toss of 12.01 meters. Senior JoJo Huczko tied for third in the pole vault after clearing 3.48 meters. In the triple jump, junior Jocelyn Kiefel placed fourth with a mark of 11.12 meters while sophomore Iniyaa Mohanraj took eighth with a mark of 10.61 meters.

On the track, junior Mia Constantin crossed the finish line seventh overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.94 while junior Rhythm Satav finished ninth with a time of 2:30.63. Three Tartans finished in the top 10 in the 5,000-meter run: junior Lauren May took second with a time of 19:14.90; first-year Kara Mathias took fifth with a time of 19:28.35; and junior Lauryn McKenna took tenth with a time of 20:14.69. 

The Bucknell Invitation will be covered in next week’s issue of The Tartan, along with the Slippery Rock Last Chance Meet, which is happening on Thursday, April 18. 

Softball

On April 13, the Carnegie Mellon softball team traveled to New York University for a doubleheader. 

In the first game, senior Amanda Smith recorded a no-hitter and seven strikeouts, only having one walk in the seventh inning. The Tartans recorded their first run in the third inning following a triple from first-year Jasmine Chao, who scored on a wild pitch. The Tartans added two more to their score in the sixth and seventh innings, and won the game 3-0 over the Violets.

The Tartans headed into the second game with a strong start, scoring six in the top of the first. NYU responded with four of their own. In the next inning, the Tartans put four more on the board, and another three in the top of the third. The Violets put on more on the board in the bottom of the third, making it 13-5 at the start of the fourth inning. The Tartans brought another one home in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth. NYU recorded two more in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn’t enough, and the Tartans won 17-7 in six innings. 

These two wins have put the Tartans at 12-10 for the season and 6-4 in divisional play. They also took on the Violets in another doubleheader on Sunday, April 14, which will be covered in the next issue of the Tartans. Carnegie Mellon will next take on Washington University at St. Louis on Friday, April 19.
