
Softball
The Carnegie Mellon softball team had two double headers this week: on Sunday, April 14 against New York University and on Saturday, April 20 against Washington University at St. Louis. The game against New York University was the Tartans’ second double header against the Violets, with the Tartans previously winning 3-0 and 17-7 against the Violets on Saturday, April 19.
Starting off the second double header, NYU was first on the board, earning a run in the bottom of the first. The Tartans responded with four of their own in the top of the second. The Tartans extended their lead with one run in the fourth and another two in the fifth. The Violets answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the Tartans closed out the game with two more runs in the top of the seventh, winning the game 9-3 overall. Junior Abbey Reese recorded two doubles in the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate and brought two Tartans home.
In the second game, the Tartans were the first on the board during the top of the first when sophomore Koko Sagae grounded out to bring home senior Kiera Boucher, making it 1-0. Sagae brought another Tartan home in the third inning, making it 2-0.
NYU responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth, putting the Tartans on the back foot, 2-5. Neither team recorded another run, giving the Tartans their first and only loss of the weekend.
On April 21, the Tartans hosted Washington University at St. Louis for a double header.
In the first game, the Bears earned the first run of the game, and furthered their lead by another run in the third inning, making it 2-0 Bears. The Tartans responded with a run in the fourth inning that scored sophomore Maya Goodwin, who had tripled.
In the seventh inning, Reese brought home Sagae with a double to right center, tying the game, and the teams advanced into extra innings. Washington put up two runs in the top of the eighth, but the Tartans didn’t give up so easily. A combination of a Washington error and a single from first-year Allison Li brought in three runs, giving the Tartans the win, 5-4.
Returning to the field for game two, the Bears were the first on the board when they brought home three in the top of the second.
Each team recorded one run in the third inning — including a home run from Tartan senior Kiera Boucher — making it a 4-1 game. The Tartans tied it up 4-4 in the fourth thanks to a single from first-year Maddy Beall and a homer from Faith Lawrence. The Bears took a 5-4 edge in the top of the fifth, but another home run from Boucher tied it back up at five-all. Washington then scored four unanswered runs across the sixth and seventh innings, giving the Tartans a 9-5 loss.
These wins and losses moved the Tartans to 14-12 on the season and 8-6 in division play. The softball team also faced Washington University at St. Louis in another double header on Sunday, April 21. The Tartans will be on the road for the rest of the season, starting with a double header against Geneva College on Wednesday, April 24.
Men’s Tennis
On April 20, the 25th-ranked Carnegie Mellon men’s tennis team hosted the fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University.
In singles play, the senior team of Nicholas Wenink and Nadim Motaghedi were able to take down their opponents 8-6. The other Tartan double teams were not able to get an edge over their opponents, and the Tartans headed into singles play behind, 1-2.
In first singles, first-year Raghav Jangbahadur was able to tie the score at two-all after going 6-3, 6-3 over his Spartan opponent. Another Tartan point came from Wenink in the fourth spot, who went 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-6) against his opponent. Unfortunately, the rest of the Tartans fell against their Case Western opponents, and the Tartans lost, 3-6.
The team is now 6-9 on the season for dual match play. The Tartans will be heading to Altamonte Springs, Fla. for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships that start on Thursday, April 25.
Women’s Tennis
On Thursday, April 18, the ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon women’s tennis team hosted Franciscan University.
The Tartans swept doubles play, starting off singles 3-0.
In the first doubles spot, junior Zoe Angell and senior Danna Taylor went 8-0; in second doubles, sophomores Divya Venkatarama and Anna Chow went 8-1; in third doubles, sophomore Anika Joshi and first-year Ainika Hou also went 8-0 to complete the sweep.
The Tartans also dominated in singles play, with every Tartan closing out their match in two sets. Several Tartans went 6-0 in the second set, giving the Tartans a dominating 9-0 win over Franciscan.
The Tartans are now 11-4 in dual match play this season, and their Sunday, April 21 match against 43rd-ranked Kenyon College will be covered in next week’s edition of The Tartan. After that, the Tartans will be heading to Altamonte Springs, Fla. for the UAA Championships that start on Friday, April 26.
Men’s Track and Field
The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team competed in two meets this week: the John Papa Invitational at Slippery Rock University on Thursday, April 18, and the Benson Hodge Memorial Invitational on Friday, April 19.
At the John Papa Invitational, a number of Tartans recorded top scores.
Sophomore Sam Alligood earned sixth in both the discus and hammer throws, along with fourth in shot put. In discus, he got a mark of 45.19 meters; in hammer throw, a mark of 46.93 meters; and a mark of 15.31 meters in shot put.
First-year Derek Armfield finished fifth in the javelin throw after a throw of 51.92 meters. Sophomore Morgan Johnson took first in the long jump with a mark of 7.06 meters.
In the high jump, junior Sebastian Sanso cleared 1.88 meters, finishing sixth. Sanso also took second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.60 meters, while first-year Pujith Kachana took sixth with a mark of 12.65 meters.
In the pole vault, sophomore Christian Duckworth finished second after clearing 4.65 meters.
In the 400-meter dash, first-year Jeremy Ocloo took second with a time of 49.61 while sophomore Gavin Williams took fifth with a time of 50.31. A group of Tartans took fourth through sixth in the 400-meter hurdles; senior Thomas Rich, first-year Philip Ma, and sophomore Tyler Williams finished in 56.03, 57.35, and 57.72, respectively.
Some Tartans also competed in the Venson Hodge Memorial Invitational the following day.
Junior Sean Dutton took fourth in the 800-meter race after crossing the finish line in 1:56.42 while senior Alex Ivanov took ninth with a time of 2:02.03. In the 1,500-meter race, junior Eamon Brady took first with a time of 3:55.46; junior Aleksei Seleskiy finished right behind him in second with a time of 3:56.37 while first-years Christian Brower and Nathan Massie took fourth and eighth, respectively, with time of 3:56.81 and 4:03.58.
The Tartans will be back in action this upcoming weekend when they host the UAA Championships on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28.
Women’s Track and Field
On Thursday, April 18, members of the Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team headed to Slippery Rock University to compete in the John Papa Invitation and recorded top finishes.
In the 100-meter hurdles, senior Liz Barre took first place with a time of 14.58. Barre also took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.70. The 4×100-meter relay team of sophomore Iniyaa Mohanraj, graduate student Emily DeAugustino, junior Jocelyn Kiefel, and sophomore Zoe King crossed the finish line fifth with a time of 52.06.
Senior JoJo Huczko took fourth in the pole vault after clearing 3.60 meters. Mohanraj finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 5.53 meters. In the triple jump, Kiefel took third with a mark of 11.12 meters while Mohanraj took sixth with a mark of 10.73 meters. Junior Kayla Rountree took eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 42.07 meters. In the shot put, junior Taylor Symonette took eighth with a mark of 11.82 meters. Junior Jolie Wasserman took sixth in the javelin throw with a mark of 35.29 meters.
The Tartans will be back in action this upcoming weekend when they host the UAA Championships on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28.
