
Women’s Cross Country
On Saturday, Sept. 14, Carnegie Mellon’s women’s cross country team competed in the Robert Morris University Colonial Invitational. Overall, The Tartans placed third with 65 points in the 5k race. Sophomore Ananya Devpura secured ninth place, crossing the finish line first for the Tartans with a time of 18:12.48. Freshman Elise Kempf was just behind her in 10th place with a time of 18:15.12. Junior Margaret Ann Healy finished not long after with a time of 18:19.42, earning her 12th place. Junior Orit Shiang and freshman Emma Horsley finished in 19th and 20th with times of 18:48.91 and 18:49.42, respectively. Sophomore Maya Ducker secured 26th place with a time of 19:01.03, junior Jacqueline Liu finished 28th with a time of 19:03.65.
The Tartans are scheduled to compete in the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Men’s Cross Country
On Saturday, Sept. 14, Carnegie Mellon’s men’s cross country team competed in the Robert Morris University Colonial Invitational. The Tartans took home first with a score of 23. Anthony Toskin, a graduate student, came in second overall, crossing first for the Tartans, with a time of 25:08.68. Senior Matthew Coyle was just behind him in third with a time of 25:09.02. Junior Ryan Podnar followed shortly after with a time of 25:11.56, securing fourth place. Sophomore Matthew Short finished in sixth with a time of 25:35.60. Senior Colin McLaughlin finished with a time of 25:39.19 placing him in eighth. Sophomore Christian Brower placed 11th with a time of 25:43.77.
The Tartans are scheduled to compete in the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Men’s Golf
On Monday, Sept. 9, the Carnegie Mellon men’s golf team opened against the University of Rochester in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship. The Tartans lost with a final score of 3–2 at the competition at the Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio. Sophomore Steven Shea and freshman Leonardo Vieira each won their matches.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, they faced New York University on the second day of the UAA Championship and won with a final score of 5–0. Shea, sophomore Justin luan, Vieira, junior David Zhang, and senior Justin Chan, all won their matches against the Violets. Shea earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Next, the Tartans will travel to Rochester, New York to compete at the NCAA Preview on Sept. 22 and 23.
Women’s Golf
On Monday, Sept. 9, the Carnegie Mellon women’s golf team opened against New York University in the UAA Championship. The Tartans won with a final score of 4–1. Junior Wenna Zhang, senior Kaylin Yeoh, sophomore Nikita Jadhav, and freshman Cecilia Jia all won their individual matches.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the second day of the championship, the Tartans faced Emory University and lost with a score of 4–1. Zhang won her game, and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Next, the team will compete at the Montgomery Country Club Women’s Intercollegiate on Sept. 22 and 23.
Women’s Tennis
On Sept. 7 and 8, Carnegie Mellon’s women’s tennis team hosted an invitational against Case Western Reserve University and Duquesne University. Out of 15 double matches, the Tartans won nine. Ainika Hou, a sophomore, won all three matches with different partners. Senior Zoe Angell won two double matches with three freshmen: Victoria Gazda, Rachel Li, and Joycie Lu. In singles play, the Tartans went 10–10. Freshman Ancele Dolensek and Gazda won both of their matches. Freshman Manuela Van Cotthem finished the weekend with a mark of 2–1.
On Friday, Sept. 13 and Sunday, Sept. 14, the Tartans competed in the Kenyon Invitational.
Men’s Tennis
The weekend of Sept. 7, Carnegie Mellon’s men’s tennis team competed in the Denison Invitational alongside Denison, Kenyon, Chicago, Washington and Lee, Case Western Reserve, and Northwestern Ohio. In singles, the Tartans secured four wins. Will Secord, first year, and Alex Feies, freshman, won in straight sets. Freshmen Brendan Hendrata and Fernando Limon each won a match. In doubles, senior Chaitanya Irkar paired with Chavez to win with a final score of 6–3. Feies and Chavez also won with a final score of 7–6.
The Tartans will host matches on Friday Sept. 20 and Sunday Sept. 21.
Women’s Volleyball
On Friday, Sept. 13, the Carnegie Mellon women’s volleyball team traveled to Virginia for the first day of the Randolph-Macon Invite. The Tartans won against Salisbury University with a score of 3–1.
Salisbury took the first set with a score of 27–25, but the Tartans quickly surpassed by winning the second, third, and fourth sets withscores of 25–18, 25–11, and 25–19, respectively. With 16 kills, junior Elizabeth Schlemmer led the offense; Laura Reichard, graduate student, followed shortly behind with 10. Neha Tummala, sophomore, had a total of 40 assists out of 48. Abby Chen, a senior, had 24 digs. In total, the Tartans had 12 serving aces, Tummala earning five of those.
On Saturday, Sept. 14, the second day of the Randolph-Macon Invite, the Tartans faced both Washington and Lee and Randolph-Macon, losing 3–2 and winning 3–0, respectively.
In the game against Washington and Lee, the Tartans won the first set 25–20. Washington and Lee won the second and third sets, with scores of 25–23 and 25–20, respectively, but were quickly tied back up within the fourth set, with the Tartans winning 26–24. Graduate student Laura Reichard led with 23 kills. Schlemmer had 16 kills in total. Overall, the Tartans secured 67 kills. Junior Katherine Jackson and freshman Izzy Saffert had two serving aces. Julianna McFarland, a junior, had four blocks. Tummala had a total of 54 assists. Recihard had 35 digs, Tummala had 32, and Chen had 30.
Against Randolph-Macon, the Tartans won with the following scores of 25–22, 25–23, and 25–20. Jackson led with eight kills, Chen and Tummala served three aces, Tummala had a total of 26 assists, and sophomore Zoe Gavros had 14 digs while Schlemmer had 12.
Next, the Tartans will face Susquehanna University in the Highmark Center on Friday Sept. 20.
Football
Carnegie Mellon’s football team took on Geneva College at the home opening game on Saturday Sept. 14. Junior Joey McGinnis IV secured the first score for the Tartans on a 2-yard rush placing the Tartans at 7–0. Geneva combated this with a 1-yard push, evening out the score. The Tartans quickly pulled ahead, with another 2-yard touchdown made by McGinnis putting the score at 14–7. Without any team scoring in the third quarter, McGinnis, once more, made a third touchdown on a 3-yard rush, putting the score at 21–7.

Graduate student Logan Young, linebacker for the Tartans, set the team up for success with a strike, aided by graduate student Ben Mills, quarterback, to Dominic Voiland, wide receiver, placing the score at 28–7. Young recovered a forced fumble by senior Vincent Ceci, linebacker, allowing for a touchdown strike from Mills to Voiland placing the score at 34–7. Senior Brady Hess, quarterback of the team, threw a touchdown to sophomore Brendan McCullough, wide receiver, setting the final score at 41–7.
The Tartans will host the Bethany Bison on Saturday, Sept. 21. Kickoff starts at 7:00 p.m.
Men’s Soccer
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Carnegie Mellon’s men’s soccer team won 3–0 against Washington and Jefferson College. Dallan Schoenberger, graduate student, scored the first goal after cheating a pass from Tristan Gonzalez, a freshman, and finishing the shot with his right foot. Diederik Schlingemann, graduate student, scored the second goal with an assist by Rohan Dhingra, junior, and Jake Slackman, a senior. The third goal was made by senior Billy Bouculavas following a pass from freshman Sola Nishimura. Carnegie Mellon shot 19 in total and Washington and Jefferson only three.
On Saturday, Sept. 14, Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team hosted Montclair State University, who won with a score of 2–0. The Tartans shot three goals, all of which were stopped by Montclair’s goalkeeper. Two of these shots were made by graduate student Robert Lloyd. In the 35th minute of the game, Montclair made the score 1–0 with a goal. Shortly into the second half, Montclair scored again, putting the score to 2–0. William Burger, junior, made a total of five saves throughout the game.
On Wednesday, Sept. 18 the Tartans will travel to Grove City College for their next game.
Women’s Soccer
On Thursday, Sept. 12, the Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team opposed Point Park University. The game ended in a draw, with a final score of 1–1. The Tartans made a total of six shots in the first half. Point Park made zero shots in the first half. Point Park scored on their second shot, but the game was tied up shortly after with a shot from Maria Drazenovic, a freshman. Alana Frederick, a senior, assisted with a free kick service.
Up next, on Sept. 15, SUNY Cortland will be hosted here at Carnegie Mellon.
