(Spoiler free!)
Last week, I was so blessed to be able to go see “Venom: The Last Dance” on the very first night it was being shown in theaters. Having seen and enjoyed both previous Venom movies, I was eager to consume another delightful movie about two losers matching each other’s freak. The 37 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes did not deter me — in fact, it made me even more excited! I knew some silly stuff was about to go down.
I was not disappointed in the slightest.
First and foremost, Eddie and Venom are so boyfriends. Not canonically, but… just watch the movie. You’ll see what I mean. They talk about future plans. They gaze longingly at a married couple. We just get so much casual Eddie and Venom interaction in this one, I feel like it really fleshed out their relationship and leaned into the affection. I loved it so much.
I thought the story was pretty good, but I do have some criticisms — rare, I know! The main plot about Eddie and Venom on the run from wacky otherworld creatures is good, and they meet some really fun characters and have great interactions along the way. However, I feel like the movie kept cutting away from the action to focus on side characters that I didn’t really care about. I think they either needed to focus less on those characters or make them a bigger part of the story.
The soundtrack and score were fun! The score has a sort of dark and broody sci-fi tone that gets pretty industrial at times. It was pretty good but didn’t blow me away the way that some other scores have recently. The soundtrack… What do I say about the soundtrack? Overall, it was really strong. There were super fun moments, and super sweet moments, and super awesome moments! But be warned… there is a jumpscare at the end… I can’t tell you what it is. You’ll have to see for yourself. On the whole though, the soundtrack really lends itself to some of my absolute favorite moments in the movie.
By far my favorite part about this movie was seeing how Eddie and Venom interacted in a whole new set of circumstances, and really getting to experience their growth together. It was just so fun! Eddie and Venom are both really strong and totally ridiculous personalities, and then they meet up with more wacky guys! I am not exaggerating when I say that I was grinning and giggling throughout the whole movie. It’s FUN! Do not listen to the critics. This movie may not be a high art piece, but it is an absolutely DELIGHTFUL time at every single turn.
If you like fun things, go see “Venom: The Last Dance.” And if you don’t like fun things, maybe just sit down and reflect on why that is.
