Feb. 17–Feb. 23
Bi-monthly, The Roots Cellar, Pittsburgh’s Center for the Arts, $10 student tickets
To any readers who have recently downloaded their identity from “A Complete Unknown”, the new Bob Dylan biopic, and are looking to discover the next Joan Baez themselves, this venue is for you. Charles D. Marshall’s 1911 bright yellow mansion on “Millionaire’s Row” is now home to Pittsburgh’s Center for the Arts. While the Center runs workshops and classes upstairs, its basement houses The Roots Center, a folk performance venue. The space is intimate and community-oriented, and the space’s organization Calliope hosts folk artists bimonthly. The venue’s next event features Molly Alphabet on March 6 at 7 p.m.
Feb. 5–23, Pittsburgh Public Theater, student tickets available
Alice Childress’s 1955 play “Trouble in Mind” was set to be the first play by a Black woman to be performed on Broadway; its premiere was delayed for 66 years until 2021 because Childress refused to rewrite the story’s ending. Perhaps Childress was inspired by her story itself — Wiletta Mayer is a Black actress in rehearsals for a Broadway show who grapples with playing harmful stereotypes onstage. The Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production marks the Pittsburgh premiere and is closing this week.
Feb. 22, 12–3 p.m., South Side Flats
