Men’s Cross Country
On Oct. 5, the 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon men’s cross country team competed in the Paul Short Invitational at Bethlehem, Pa. In an event that featured teams from Division I, II, and III, the Tartans were the third Division III team to finish in the 8k.
Junior Ryan Podnar posted the fastest time on the team with a 24:33.5, which was 68th out of 374 contestants. Senior Matthew Coyle followed with a time of 24:37.7, and graduate Anthony Toskin was the third Tartan to finish with a time of 24:50.9. Seniors Eamon Brady and Colin McLaughlin finished with times of 25:15.6 and 25:31.2, respectively.
Women’s Cross Country
The women’s cross country team competed in the white race 6k at Paul Short, and placed eighth overall.
The leading Tartan was freshman Elise Kempf, coming in 34th with a time of 22:10.6. Junior Orit Shang finished three seconds later at 22:13.4. Junior Margaret Ann Healy followed shortly after with a time of 22:15.5, and freshman Emma Horsley crossed the line 0.2 seconds later. Graduate student Caitlin Guilfoyle recorded a time of 22:55.8.
The Tartans will next compete in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational at Schenley Park on Oct. 12.
Men’s Football
The 15th-ranked Tartans took on Waynesburg University at Gesling Stadium on Oct. 5 and won in a dominant 42–0 shutout.
The Tartans’ first score came via a blocked punt by sophomore Giacomo Valente, returned for a touchdown by sophomore defensive back Ethan Ming. After a series of punts, graduate quarterback Ben Mills found sophomore Reece Kolke for a 4-yard touchdown with 11:27 left in the half. A Waynesburg fumble then set up a one-yard end zone dive from junior quarterback Joey McGinnis IV. The Tartans led at the half 21–0.
Carnegie Mellon extended the lead to 28–0 after a six play drive ended with a Mills touchdown to senior wideout Will Squibb. Later in the third, McGinnis IV scored his second touchdown on another rush from the one-yard line.
Midway through the fourth quarter, McGinnis recorded his first career passing attempt and passing touchdown at the same time, connecting with freshman wide receiver Luca Cuttita for a 21-yard strike that was the final score of the game.
Mills’ 58 career passing touchdowns is an all-time Tartans record. The Tartans’ next game is away against Grove City College on Oct. 12, where Carnegie Mellon hopes to extend its 12-game win streak.

Men’s Golf
The Carnegie Mellon men’s golf team finished play in the 54-hole Gate City Invitational at Greensboro, N.C. on Oct. 1. The Tartans carded 858 overall (287-285-286), which was sixth out of 18 teams present.
Freshman Leonardo Vieira was the leading Tartan with a six-under par 210, placing 11th individually out of 96 golfers. Senior Justin Chang fired a one-under par 215, junior David Zhang finished with a 217, and sophomore Steven Shea and freshman Will Blankenship both fired 222.
Carnegie Mellon will next play in the Oct. 13-15 Golfweek Fall Preview in Destin, Fla.
Women’s Soccer
On Sept. 29, the Tartans won their fifth straight match 3–0 at Salisbury University.
Sophomore Audrey Bianco opened the scoring for Carnegie Mellon with an unassisted shot in the third minute from outside the box. Senior Gemma Jefferson converted a corner kick from freshman Alma Zhong in the 20th minute to extend the lead to 2–0. Late in the second half, graduate student Erin Magid finished another play off of a corner kick.
Later that week, Carnegie Mellon returned home to face Brandeis University in a matchup between the #4 and #21 ranked teams.
The game remained scoreless until the 87th minute, where graduate student Cecelia Dieterich scored a game-winner off of an Audrey Bianco assist. It was the Tartans’ sixth shot on goal of the game, and Dieterich’s third overall.
With the win, the Tartans improved to 8–0–3. Their next match is at #14 University of Rochester on Oct. 12.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
The first swimming and diving event of the season for the Tartans was a relay meet against the University of Pittsburgh on Oct. 5. Carnegie Mellon came in second with 53 points.
Junior Arnav Deshpande, sophomore Aaron Lee, sophomore Brayden Morford, and junior DJ Lloyd won the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:30.88. Morford, Lloyd, and freshman Todd Dong also won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:23.04. Lee, senior Christian Lanuza, and junior Max Kulbida won the 300-yard breaststroke relay with a 2:49.19, the last of Carnegie Mellon’s three victories.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
The women’s team also competed against Pitt in the opening invitational. Carnegie Mellon placed second with 16 points.
The Tartans’ 300-yard breaststroke team of junior Audrey Lambert, junior Yitian Zhang, and freshman Allie Kim took third in the event with 3:23.10. Junior Sophie Elliot, Lambert, junior Grace Malinger, and junior Eliana Szabo placed fifth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.80.
Men’s Tennis
In the final rounds of the ITA Southeast Regionals, freshman Alex Feies won in the semifinals and finals to take the ITA Southeast Regionals Singles Championship.
Feies and sophomore Raghav Jangbahadur were the two qualifying Tartans to enter the semifinal round. Feies defeated No. 1 seeded Michael Melnikov of Swarthmore College 6–1, 6–2, while Jangbahadur lost a 6–0, 7–6(6) match to Chakor Sankaran Rajendra of Johns Hopkins University.
Feies continued his strong showing in his finals matchup against Sankaran Rajendra, winning his sets 6–3, 6–0.
Feies is the second straight freshman for the Tartans to earn the ITA Southeast Regionals Singles Championship, following Jangbahadur.
Women’s Volleyball
Carnegie Mellon finished the first week of UAA round robin play at NYU with a 3–0 victory against Brandeis University.
The Tartans won with set scores of 25–17, 25–21, and 25–19. Graduate student Laura Reichard contributed nine out of the team’s 36 kills, while sophomore Neha Tummala had 26 of the team’s 32 assists. Reichard also led the team with 12 digs.
On Oct. 5, Carnegie Mellon traveled to Meadville, Pa. to play Allegheny College. The Tartans went up 2–0 with set scores of 26–24 and 25–19, but the Gators responded with set wins of 25–20 and 25–21 to even the score at 2–2. Carnegie Mellon then responded with a decisive fifth set victory of 15–11.
Reichard collected a double-double with 20 kills and 22 digs, and senior Abby Chen tallied a career-best 33 digs. Tummala dished another 48 assists and also had 15 digs. Juniors Bella Woodard and Katherine Jackson had 14 and 10 kills, respectively.
The Tartans advanced to 11–6 on the season and will play next at home against Chatham College on Oct. 11.
