Men’s Track and Field
On March 8 and March 9, members of the Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team headed to the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Virginia Beach, Va.
On the first day, senior Thomas Rich finished four events of the heptathlon and sat in second place with a score of 2,916 points. Senior Andrew McGovern ran in the 800-meter preliminaries and earned a time of 1:51.16, missing the finals by .03 seconds.
On the second day, Rich completed the final three events of the heptathlon, and ended with 5,114 points, earning him fourth place and breaking the previous school record of 4,991 points that he set earlier this season. Third-year Colin McLaughlin competed in the 3,000-meter run and placed third with a time of 8:10.74. Both Rich and McLaughlin earned All-American honors for their efforts.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team will be back in action this upcoming week when they head to West Virginia University for the West Virginia Stan Romanoski Open.
Women’s Track and Field
On March 8 and March 9, Graduate student Liz Barre competed on behalf of Carnegie Mellon at the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Virginia Beach, Va.
Barre placed fourth in the pentathlon with 3,740 points, including a career-best throw of 11.25 meters in the shot put. Barre earned All-American honors for the event for her third year in a row. Barre also competed in the high jump and cleared the bar at 1.74 meters, beating her previous school record of 1.71 meters and earning her third place. She also earned All-American honors for this event for the second season in a row.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team will be back in action this upcoming week when they head to West Virginia University for the West Virginia Stan Romanoski Open.
Softball
On Saturday, March 16, the Carnegie Mellon women’s softball team headed to Salisbury University for the Salisbury Tournament.
The Tartans first took on the College of New Jersey, opening scoring early in the top of the first thanks to a run from senior Kiera Boucher. The Lions responded with a sacrifice fly to bring one in, making it 1-1 at the end of the first inning. The Tartans would be the next on the board in the fourth inning thanks to a triple from second-year Maya Goodwin and a sacrifice fly from third-year Allie Rome that brought Goodwin home. In the fifth inning, second-year Kyr Brenneman hit an infield single to bring home two more Tartans. However, a Lions home run in the bottom of the fifth made it 5-3 Tartans. The Lions were able to earn two more runs across the next two innings and took the game into extra innings. The Lions were able to bring one more home during the extra inning and the Tartans ultimately fell 6-5.
For their second game of the day, the Tartans took on second-ranked Salisbury University. The Tartans were the first on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Goodwin brought home second-year Kira Monji with a single down the right field line. Salisbury proceeded to tie it at one at the top of the fifth, and later took the lead after scoring off a double. The Tartans weren’t able to score any points in the bottom of the seventh and lost 2-1.
The Tartans also took on King’s College and Manhattanville College on Sunday, March 17 as part of the Salisbury Tournament, which will be covered in next week’s edition of The Tartan. Their next games after that will be on Wednesday, March 20, when they travel to Waynesburg University for a doubleheader.
Men’s Golf
On March 11, the Carnegie Mellon men’s golf team headed to the 36-hole Tiger Invitational at the Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C. while the “B” Team competed in the Hampden-Sydney Invite in at Seven Lakes Country Club in Seven Lakes, N.C.
At the Tiger Invitational, third-year Justin Chan and senior Brian Xu placed eighth individually out of a field of over 90 golfers, both ending with 146. Chan went 74-72 while Xu went 72-74 on the par 72 course. The Tartans ended up earning 591 (290-301) and finished third in the invitational.
The “B” team, however, topped the field with a score of 614 (312-302) against 10 other teams. second-year Jay Saluja led the Tartans with a 150 (79-75) on the par 71 course and earned individual medalist honors in the field of 68 golfers. First-year Steven Shea finished with the second-best score for the Tartans, finishing with 154 (79-75).
The Tartans will next compete at the three-day Jekyll Island Invitational at King and Prince Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia, beginning Friday, March 22.
Women’s Golf
On Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12, the Carnegie Mellon women’s golf team headed to Savannah, Ga. for the Savannah Invitational hosted by Berry College.
On the first day, the Tartans recorded a score of 296 and were on the top of the table. Graduate student Alexis Sudjianto and first-year Samantha Wang both shot 72 — par for the course — and tied for third individually out of 97 golfers. On the second day, Wang shot for a two-under 70 and tied for individual medalist for the invitational. The combined efforts of the team earned the Tartans a final score of 583 (296-287), earning them first in the tournament.
The Tartans will next be competing in the Capitol Hill Classic at The Senator at RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Prattville, Ala. on March 25-26.
