Men’s Tennis

The 37th-ranked Carnegie Mellon men’s tennis team hosted the 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee University at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club.

The Tartans picked up two points during doubles play. Seniors Nicholas Wernick and Nadim Motaghedi made it 1-1 after winning their match 8-7 (7-1). The set of first-years Raghav Jangbahadur and Daniel Kong picked up the second Tartan point after going 8-7 (16-14). Heading into singles play, the Tartans were on top 2-1.

Wernick earned the first Tartan singles point in the fourth spot, going 6-3, 6-3 against his opponent. In the third spot, Kong went 6-1, 6-4 to pick up another point for the Tartans, and first-year Jonathan Gru picked up another point in the sixth singles, going 6-3, 6-3, and earning another Tartan point. Before the Tartans reached five points, the General only picked up one singles point, and left the second and fifth singles unfinished. The Tartans claimed victory, 5-2, and sat at 4-6 overall.

The Tartans will next be on the road on April 6 when they head to the University of Mary Washington for an 11 a.m. start.

Men’s Golf

The Carnegie Mellon men’s golf team competed in the 54-hole Jekyll Island Collegiate from Friday, March 22 to Sunday, March 24. 

On the first day, the Tartans put up a score of 297, with third-year Justin Chan leading the Tartans with a 72 on the par-72 course. First-year Ryan Dannegger got the next-best Tartan score with a total of 74. On the second day, play was suspended due to inclement weather, but was finished on the morning of the third day. The Tartans finished the second round with a 279, this time senior Brian Xu leading the Tartans with a score of 67. Xu and Chan both finished the third round with a score of 74, and the Tartans overall finished the third round with a score of 299, totalling to 875. This earned the Tartans second place out of a field of 30 teams. 

The team will next be competing over the weekend of April 14 to April 16 at the Shoals Intercollegiate in Florence, Ala.

Women’s Golf

The Carnegie Mellon women’s golf team competed in the Capitol Hill Classic on Monday and Tuesday, March 25 and 26. The 36-hole tournament was shortened to 27 holes due to inclement weather on the second day.

Graduate student Alexis Sudjianto was the top performer for the Tartans and the event, shooting 74 on the first 18 holes and 34 in the last nine, earning individual medalist honors. Third-year Sriya Mupparaju tied for fourth individual with a score of 111 (76-35), and third-year Kaylin Yeoh tied for seventh with a score of 112 (77-35). Second-year Sense Sangkagoon recorded a 117 (78-39) while first-year Samantha Wang scored a 119 (85-34). The efforts of this team earned the Tartans first place overall, 11 shots over par. First-year Nikita Jadhav also competed individually, recording a 114 (77-37). 

This win for the Tartans is their fifth of the season, with the school record being six set in the 2014-2015 season. The team will be back in action on April 8 and 9 when they compete in the Max and Susan Stith Invitational at the Dominion Club in Glen Allen, Va. 

Men’s Track and Field

On Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30, the Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team hosted the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, which consisted of teams from Division I, II, and III schools. 

For the second week in a row, second-year Christian Duckworth broke the school record for the pole vault, clearing 4.88 meters and tying the Gesling Stadium record that was set in 2017. First-year Ryan Handron placed fifth in the pole vault after clearing 4.32 meters. In the long jump, second-year Morgan Johnson took first with a mark of 6.71 meters. Johnson also placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.32 meters. First-year Atai Tahasan took third in the triple jump with a mark of 13.59 meters. 

Senior Thomas Rich and third-year Sebastian Sanso tied for fifth in the high jump after clearing 1.86 meters. In javelin, graduate student Jonathan David took fourth after throwing 51.34 meters. In discus, second-year Sam Alligood took second with a mark of 43.92 meters. Alligood also took sixth in the shot put with a toss of 14.50 meters. 

The Tartans swept the 800-meter run, with graduate student Leland Davies, third-year Eamon Brady, and third-year Colin McLaughlin taking the top three spots, respectively, with times of 1:54.68, 1:55.28, and 1:55.35. Senior David Durdaller took first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:18.34 while senior Jacob Hsu took fifth with a time of 9:41.05. In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Andrew McGovern took first with a time of 53.55. Third-year Matthew Coyle took first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:35.82 

First-years Adam Kollgaard and Angelo Parrino took third and fourth in the 3,000-meter run with times of 8:54.59 and 9:06.10, respectively. Rich took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.52. First-year Jeremy Ocloo placed fourth in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.02. In the 1,500-meter race, McLaughlin and first-year Matthew Short crossed the finish line third and fourth with times of 3:57.21 and 3:59.21, respectively. The 4×400-meter relay team of senior Pranav Rajbhandari, Davies, first-year Philip Ma, and McGovern closed out the meet, taking first with a time of 3:20.27.

The Tartans will be back in action next week, when they head to the Dave Labor Invitational at Slippery Rock University on April 6. 

Women’s Track and Field

In pole vault, senior JoJo Huczko took sixth after clearing 3.12 meters. Third-year Taylor Symonette placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 12.23 meters. In the hammer throw, third-year Kayla Rountree placed seventh with a mark of 42.77 meters. In the long jump, graduate student Liz Barre tied for second with 5.13 meters, and second-year Zoe King took sixth with 5.03 meters. In the triple jump, second-year Iniyaa Mohanraj placed fourth with a jump of 10.49 meters. Third-year Jolie Wasserman finished eighth in the javelin throw with a mark of 33.45 meters. 

In the 400-meter hurdles, Barre took first after crossing the finish line in 1:03.03. In the 3,000-meter run, first-year Ananya Devpura won the event with a time of 11:01.59. Senior Isabella Rhee took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.72. Second-year Orit Shiang claimed second place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:34.91. Second-year Jacqueline Liu placed sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:47.24. First-year Alaina Patel crossed the finish line fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:28.06.

The Tartans will be back in action next week, when they head to the Dave Labor Invitational at Slippery Rock University on April 6.
