Men’s Tennis

On March 31, the 37th-ranked Carnegie Mellon men’s tennis team hosted the 12th-ranked Denison University men’s team. The Tartans came out of doubles with one point thanks to the team efforts of second-year Akshay Joshi and senior Derek Wong, who won in the second spot, 8-5. No Tartans recorded any points in the singles play, with Joshi and first-year Daniel Kong going to three sets. Overall, the Tartans fell 8-1.

The Tartans went on the road for their next match, taking on 18th-ranked University of Mary Washington on April 6. The Tartans were leading 2-1 out of doubles play. The team of Wong and Joshi earned a point in the second doubles spot after going 8-3, and the team of seniors Nicholas Wenick and Nadim Motaghedi went 8-5, scoring another point for the Tartans. 

In singles play, first-year Raghav Jangbahadur got another point for the Tartans after going 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Motaghedi in the second singles spot also went to three sets, going 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, winning another point for the Tartans. In the third spot, first-year Daniel Kong took another point for the Tartans, going 6-4, 6-4 in the third spot. Senior Nicholas Wernink furthered the Tartans’ lead in the next spot, going 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). First-year Jonathan Gu earned the last point for the Tartans in the sixth spot, going 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Overall, the Tartans went 7-2.

After this win and loss, the Carnegie Mellon men’s tennis team is now 5-7 for the season. They took on 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, April 7, and it will be covered in the next issue of the Tartan. Up next, the Tartans will take on Duquesne University on Thursday, April 11. 

Women’s Tennis

On April 6, the 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon women’s tennis team took on the 21st-ranked Mary Washington University on the road. The Tartans claimed the first point of the day thanks to the team of second-years Anna Chow and Divya Venkatarama, who won 8-1 in the second spots of doubles. Third-year Zoe Angell and senior Danna Taylor earned another point for the Tartans in the first doubles after going 8-4. The team of second-year Anika Joshi and first-year Ainika Hou completed the Tartans’ doubles sweep in the third spot, going 8-6. 

In first singles, third-year Sarah Yang went 6-1, 6-2 for another Tartans point. Taylor, Venkatarama, Hou, and Angell all won out in singles play, adding another four points to the Tartan lead. This gave the Tartans an 8-1 win.

This win moved the women’s tennis team to 9-4 in dual matches. The team played another game against Christopher Newport University on April 7, which will be covered in the issue of the Tartan, and they will be back on the road on April 21 against Kenyon College.

Men’s Track and Field

On Saturday, April 6, the Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team traveled to the Dave Labor Invitational at Slippery Rock University. 

Senior Andrew McGovern took first in the 400-meter hurdles after crossing the line in 55.33. First-year Philip Ma took eighth in the event, crossing the line at 1:00.15. Senior Thomas Rich finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.17, while third-year Micah Nowlin took sixth with a time of 15.89.

The Tartans had three teams compete in the 4×400-meter relay. The “A” team of second-year Jeremy Ocloo, graduate student Leland Davies, senior Alex Ivanov, and McGovern took first, finishing in 3:23.06. The “C” team of Rich, senior Pranav Rajbhandari, Ma, and first-year Luke Cerwin took fourth with a time of 3:30.86.

In the 800-meter run, Davies took first with a time of 1:56.50, while Ivanov placed third with a time of 1:57.67. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, second-year Kenji Tella took second with a time of 9:42.57, senior Jacob Hsu took third with a time of 9:48.32, and third-year Seth Williams took fifth with a time of 9:52.94. 

In the 200-meter dash, senior Austin Weltz took sixth with a time of 22.19. In the 5,000-meter run, first-year Adam Kollgaard took sixth with a time of 15:34.23. In the 1,500-meter run, first-year Christian Brower placed eighth with a time of 4:07.56.

On the field, the Tartans also performed well. First-year Ryan Handron placed second in the pole vault after clearing 4.65 meters. Second-year Christian Duckworth took fourth in the event, also clearing 4.65 meters, and first-year Solomon Glavach placed seventh after clearing 4.20 meters. In the triple jump, third-year Sebastian Sanso took second with a mark of 13.29 meters. First-year Pujith Kachana took seventh in this event with a mark of 12.29 meters. Second-year Sam Alligood took fifth in discus throw with a toss of 43.63 meters.

In the high jump, Rich and Sanso took sixth and seventh, respectively, after both clearing 1.88 meters. Alligood took fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.23 meters, while third-year Nathaniel Deyak took eighth with a mark of 44.17 meters.

They will be back in action on April 11, when the Tartans head to Susquehanna University.

Women’s Track and Field

On Saturday, April 6, the Carnegie Mellon women’s track and field team traveled to the Dave Labor Invitational at Slippery Rock University. 

In the 400-meter dash, senior Isabella Rhee took third with a time of 1:00.86, while senior Emily Lannen took seventh with a time of 1:02.72. Second-year Jacqueline Liu placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.83. In the 5,000-meter run, third-year Avery Tompkins took fourth with a time of 18:40.40, while first-year Ananya Devpura took sixth with a time of 19:05.97. 

Second-year Margaret Ann Healy placed seventh in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:55.98. The 4×400-meter relay team of second-year Zoe King, senior Emily Lannen, third-year Sunny Tang, and Rhee finished fourth, crossing the finish line in 4:11.01.

On the field, senior JoJo Huczko finished seventh in the pole vault, clearing 3.30 meters. Third-year Jocelyn Kiefel took eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.89 meters. 

Up next, the Tartans will travel to the Westminster Invitational on Saturday, April 13, along with the Bucknell Invitation on April 13 and April 14.
