Men’s Football
On Saturday, Sept. 21, Carnegie Mellon’s 17th-ranked football team played the Bethany Bison at Gesling Stadium.
The Tartans scored on their first drive via a 33-yard field goal from junior Justin Caputo and didn’t look back. Graduate running back Tre Vasiliades scored on a 50-yard rushing touchdown after a Bethany three-and-out, and a fumble on the next Bethany series was returned for a Tartans touchdown by defensive end Mitchell Stokey to take the score to 17-0.
Following a recovered onside kick, graduate quarterback Ben Mills threw his first touchdown of the day to sophomore wideout Brendan McCullough, and a second Bethany fumble enabled Mills to toss his second touchdown to senior wide receiver Dominic Voiland. The lead was 31-0 as the first quarter ended.
Mills’ final touchdown pass came midway through the second quarter to junior running back Willem Bouma, and a blocked Bethany punt was ran in for another Tartans touchdown by sophomore DJ Johnson to push the lead to 45-0.
A seven play drive was capped by a rushing touchdown from junior quarterback Joey McGinnis IV for Carnegie Mellon’s first second half score. Sophomore running back Giacomo Valente and junior running back Rak Agyei added the Tartans final two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The final score was 66-0.
After the win, the Tartans moved to 3-0 on the season and extended a ten game winning streak going back to last season. Carnegie Mellon’s next game is at Washington & Jefferson College on Sept. 28.

Women’s Soccer
The sixth-ranked Tartans’ first game of the week was at home against the Grove City College Wolverines. Freshman Nicole Lazarakis scored her first career goal late in the first half to give the Tartans a 1-0 lead. Graduate student Cecelia Dieterich scored off an assist from junior Vivian Wang and sophomore Saveria Ulizzi added two goals in the late stages of the game to cap a 4-1 Carnegie Mellon victory.
The Tartans’ then traveled to the Ohio Northern Polar Bears for a Sept. 21 match. Sophomore Audrey Bianco scored early in the first half and freshman Alma Zhang scored midway through the second to propel Carnegie Mellon to a 2-1 final score.
The Tartans moved to 4-0-3 after their two victories. Their next game is at home against Baldwin Wallace University on Sept. 22.
Men’s Soccer
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Tartans traveled to Grove City, Pa. to play the Wolverines. Junior Zach Schonwetter opened the scoring in the 62nd minute to put the Tartans up 1-0, but a late Grove City goal tied the game at 1-1 for good. Carnegie Mellon was sent to 3-2-2.
The Tartans’ second game of the week was a home matchup against the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops. The Bishops’ first score in the 31st minute was followed immediately by a strike from sophomore Nicholas Kourakis. The game remained even until freshman Leonardo Serodio scored his first career goal off a Kourakis assist with 10 minutes remaining in regular time – a game winner. The final score was Tartans 2, Bishops 1. Carnegie Mellon moved to 4-2-2.
The Tartans’ next match is at home against Juniata College on Sept. 25.
Women’s Volleyball
The Tartans hosted three matches between Sept. 19 and Sept. 20 and split them 2-1.
Their first game was a 3-0 sweep of Susquehanna University by set scores of 25-14, 25-15, and 25-16. Graduate student Laura Reichard and junior Julianna McFarland led the offense with 10 and 9 kills respectively, while sophomore Neha Tummala contributed 40 assists.
Their first Saturday match was a 3-1 victory against Ohio Wesleyan. The Tartans took the first two sets 25-21 and 25-19 before Ohio Wesleyan took the third, 26-24. Carnegie Mellon then finished with a decisive 25-12 set. Laura Reichard tallied 15 kills, Tummala had 44 assists, and senior Abby Chen led the team with 24 digs.
Their final weekend match was a loss against Mount Union, 3-0. Mount Union won three tight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 26-24. Reichard led the team with both 11 kills and 19 digs.
Carnegie Mellon will host Juniata College in the Highmark Center on Sept. 26.
