With Oct. 31 comes trick-or-treating, costumes, scares, and the promise that Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas” will be blasting over every radio station you turn on the next morning. Why do we have to start celebrating Christmas the moment Halloween is over even though it’s still two months away?

I went on Disney+ today to find something to watch, but instead of being greeted by the typical Disney content I was presented with an entire section of Christmas movies. Why are we watching Christmas movies already? After Thanksgiving, sure, go for it. But I couldn’t possibly imagine myself watching “The Santa Clause” when leaves are still on the trees.

A few days after Halloween, my friend and I went grocery shopping at Target. While I headed straight for the things I needed, he ran to the Christmas section — it was November 3rd! And the Christmas section has been up since Halloween at the latest. I just don’t understand the rush into the Christmas season. Why can’t we just enjoy November, a month leading up to a holiday about being grateful for everything and everyone around us (and arguably, Christmas can also be a time for thankfulness, but I’ve found that most people overlook that aspect due to the prospect of getting stuff they want).

Now, I don’t want to sound like a grinch. I do genuinely enjoy Christmas — I just don’t particularly love everything leading up to it. The stress of buying gifts and going to stores is something I don’t enjoy, especially when that’s not even the most important part of the holiday. So I am in no rush to start creating that stress and anxiety in my life when we still got another month and a half. I just can’t fathom why we have to start blasting Christmas music, decorating trees, and saying that it’s Christmastime when Halloween hasn’t even been over for 24 hours.

I urge you to just take the month of November to relax. Don’t start stressing about the gifts and the tree decorating and whatever else people supposedly love about Christmas. Just take a deep breath, stop for a minute and appreciate everything going on. Appreciate the people that you’re around and the things you’re doing. Life passes so quickly, why rush into a holiday that’s two months away when there’s so much we can focus on in the present?
